Why have a vasectomy

You are absolutely sure you don't want to have any more children. It's as simple as that.

Hint - Remember your last family reunion or the waiting room in the pediatrician's office.
Now you remember...

Remember to talk to your spouse about this first before you book the procedure. This is one decision that you don't want to fly solo on. Better yet, have your partner come to the consultation visit with you so you can both ask questions.

You might also want to talk to your family doctor or ... sometimes I hesitate to say this (what with guys being guys and all the horror stories they will conjure up about vasectomies) but talking to a friend or relative who has had a vasectomy may help you in your decision-making. I caution you, do not tell everybody at your workplace or you won't hear the end of it for months.

Other reasons for a man to have a vasectomy
You would like to enjoy sex without worrying about pregnancy every time.
Your partner has health problems making pregnancy difficult.
You do not want to risk passing on a hereditary disease or disability.
You and your partner do not want to (or cannot) use other kinds of birth control.
You want to save your partner from the surgery involved in having her tubes closed.
Reasons for a man not to have a vasectomy
You are very young.
This is relative as you can be under 30 with 4 children. (However, there is at least a 10 times increase in reversal of vasectomy rates in men younger than 30) Changing your mind is not only the perogative of the female of the species, especially if you get remarried or something tragic happens such as the loss of a child. Reversal is variable in success and very expensive ($3,000 to 5,000). It is for this reason that you have to be absolutely sure before you proceed with the big V.
Your partner is pressuring you into it.
(If your partner is using a cattle prod to get you to the appointment you ARE being pressured)
Your current relationship is unstable or unlikely to last.
You are under high stress, depressed or having difficulty making important life decisions.
You are planning to reverse it later (like when you win the lotto)
You are planning to pay for your retirement with donations to the sperm bank.
Some men regret having had a vasectomy. Do not be a statistic. Make sure that this is absolutely what you want to do before you do it.

Many men wait until their child is born or until their newborn is 6 to 12 month in age (therefore the risk of SIDS or crib death is much reduced) before they have their vasectomy.
